Georgetown, Washington, D.C.
The historic neighborhood of Georgetown is located in Northwest Washington, D.C., west of Dupont Circle along the Potomac River. The original community is older than the United States itself, founded in 1751.
Georgetown operated as its own municipality until 1871, when a new consolidated government took over the entire District of Columbia. By the end of the 19th century, streets had been renamed to conform with those of the district. Many embassies are located here today, that of France, Iceland, Sweden and Mongolia, to name a few. The present-day shopping and entertainment area centers around Wisconsin Avenue and M Street, full of high-end shops, bars and restaurants. All of Georgetown is a designated National Historic Landmark District. The Old Stone House is the oldest original structure in Washington.
